For a while now, I have followed with interest the state of things in architecture; I have seen on the Internet the situation of architects in many parts of the world, everywhere there is some sort of disappointment, perhaps a questioning about the future of the discipline. In Spain for example, due to the economic and financial problems, it is estimated that about 40% of the architects are unemployed, moreover several articles have appeared in the digital media that makes the concern of many architects, because of the low wages that their architect work earns them, clear.
Everything shows that becoming an architect today, with certain exceptions, is not a good business. Architecture demands long working hours, many “always ready” capabilities and its retribution is often squalid; but that is not the only aspect of concern in the current situation. For a long time too, some serious essayists have been highlighting the problem of handling the discipline’s knowledge’s, and even the way architecture is taught. There are few who point out with red lights, that it requires research, to generate new knowledge, to provide input from the academy and especially try and reach a common language.
From my perspective, I have argued that architecture today has a lot of deep convictions, that it is personally taking a position that involves a personal walk/growth, but that those individual paths are not necessarily shared by others.
From my point of view, trying to understand what happens with architecture, or at least trying to understand why it is having trouble in positioning itself in the platform of the necessary disciplines, (socially accepted and valued) both socially and economically, is more like a suicide problem than an external attack.
Architecture is committing suicide, and is a long process that may have started after the fall of the dogmas of the modern movement, although there are some who argue that this comes from the separation of the architectural thought. Admittedly, the modern movement made a huge effort to build a unifying discourse, international and also technically, a giant platform that had some strength and a very good theoretical performance.
After falling however, nothing came, only scattered speeches, personal ideas manifested in singular or rare architectures, the occasional theoretical effort and then emptiness, an unfillable void; therefore anything ready and trying to respond to it, to it’s accurate attack, suicide attack, simply falls apart.
What is leading architecture to suicide?, I think one of the most controversial practices ,and perhaps one of the more incident one, is the abandonment of common sense. There is not only in practice, but in the theoretical approach, a sense of escape regarding to common sense, which is no small thing, it is to abandon the ship that allows everything to stay afloat.
Common sense is perhaps the least common of the senses, but you can see when it is and when its needed, that is to say, it is a way of acting that at least leaves evidence and therefore it is possible to evaluate the reasons of certain actions, thereby giving rise to the understanding of such action by means of one’s own common sense.
Both in architectural teaching and in professional level, international and local, we can see some sign, that without further analysis indicate some erratic associated behavior of those who lose their north, that is to say, those who lose their compass which from my point of view, is just common sense.
Recovering certain direction/focus patterns, apparently, is not an easy feat and I think it requires a consensus with some urgency, a consensus that enables us to have certain clarity on the basic pillars of the architecture, on the universally accepted theories, on some visions of the future, on certain concentration centers of knowledge or global hub’s, and about conferences where the progress in architecture related areas are exposed…basically to open the doors to research once and for all.
Without prejudice that can have an attitude like a whole, I find necessary that personal reflection is made both in lecture and at work about how far we are from common sense in our work, so probably, we might have a better contact with our customers and external reviewers and thereby achieve a better position.

¿ADIÓS AL SENTIDO COMÚN?
He seguido con interés desde hace algún tiempo el estado de cosas de la arquitectura, he visto en internet la situación de los arquitectos en muchas partes del mundo, hay quizás en todos lados una suerte de decepción, quizás de interrogación sobre el futuro de esta disciplina. En España, a raíz de los problemas económicos -financieros se estima que sobre un 40 % de los arquitectos están desempleados, por otra parte han aparecido varios artículos en medios digitales en que se deja en claro la preocupación de muchos arquitectos, por el bajo nivel de salarios que implica ejercer como arquitecto.
Todo indica que hacerse arquitecto hoy, con ciertas excepciones, no es un buen negocio, la arquitectura demanda muchas horas de trabajo, muchas capacidades siempre dispuestas y la retribución muchas veces es escuálida. Pero no sólo ese aspecto es preocupante la actual situación, desde hace mucho tiempo también, algunos serios ensayistas vienen poniendo en relieve el problema de los conocimientos que maneja la disciplina, y aún la forma en que se enseña arquitectura. No son pocos los que señalan con luz roja que se requiere investigación, generar nuevo conocimiento, hacer aportes desde la academia y sobre todo, intentar alcanzar un lenguaje común.
Desde mi perspectiva, he planteado que la arquitectura hoy día tiene mucho de convicciones profundas, de asumir personalmente una postura que involucra un caminar personal, pero que esos caminos individuales no necesariamente son compartidos por otros.
Tratar de entender que pasa con la arquitectura, o al menos intentar comprender porque está teniendo problemas para situarse en la plataforma de disciplinas necesarias, socialmente aceptadas y valoradas , tanto desde el punto de vista social como económico, en mi visión es más un problema de suicidio que de ataque externo.
La arquitectura se está suicidando, y es un proceso largo que quizás haya partido luego de la caída de los dogmas del movimiento moderno, aunque hay algunos que sostienen que esto viene desde la separación del pensamiento arquitectónico de . Hay que reconocer que el movimiento moderno realizó un gigantesco esfuerzo por construir un discurso unificador, internacional y también técnico, una gigantesca plataforma que tuvo cierta solidez y una muy buena performance teórica.
Al caer sin embargo, no vino nada, sólo discursos dispersos, ideas personales que se manifiestan en arquitecturas singulares, uno que otro esfuerzo teórico y luego el vacío, el vacío que no se puede llenar, por cuanto cualquier cosa que se instale intentando dar respuestas, ante el ataque certero, suicida, se cae a pedazos.
¿Que está llevando al suicidio de la arquitectura?, pienso que una de las prácticas más controversiales y quizás más incidente es el abandono del sentido común. Hay no sólo en el ejercicio, sino en los planteamientos teóricos una huida del sentido común, lo cual no es poca cosa, se trata de abandonar el barco que posibilita que todo se mantenga a flote.
El sentido común es quizás el menos común de los sentidos, pero se puede visualizar cuando hay y cuando falta, es decir, se trata de una forma de actuar que deja al menos evidencias y que por lo tanto es posible evaluar el porqué de la actuación, dando origen de esa manera a la comprensión de la actuación por medio del calce con el propio sentido común.
Tanto en la enseñanza de arquitectura, como en el ejercicio profesional a nivel internacional y local, se aprecian ciertas señales que sin mucho que analizar, nos indican cierto comportamiento errático propio de quien pierde su norte, es decir de quien pierde su brújula que a mi modo de observar, no es más que el sentido común.
Recuperar cierto patrón de dirección al parecer no es cosa fácil y creo que requiere un consenso con cierta urgencia, un consenso que permita tener cierta claridad sobre los pilares básicos de la arquitectura, sobre la teorías universalmente aceptadas, sobre cierta visión de futuro, sobre cierto centros de concentración de conocimientos o hub mundiales, y sobre congresos donde se presente el avance en materias de arquitectura, es decir, abrir las puertas a la investigación de una vez por todas.
Sin perjuicio que se pueda tener una actitud como cuerpo, me parece que es necesaria la reflexión personal tanto en la cátedra como en el trabajo sobre que tan lejos estamos del sentido común en nuestro quehacer, probablemente así, tendremos un mejor contacto con clientes y evaluadores externos, y con ello conseguir posicionarnos mejor.
