Arquitectos urbanistas y las ciencias sociales/Urban architects and the social sciences

Urban architects and the social sciences

A few years ago I went to Europe to study a postgraduate course on city subjects, I learned a lot in that program, and even today that knowledge they are valid, so I appreciate the effort of the academics who taught it, however, in the subjects I studied , urban policies, projects and city management, I was struck by the fact that the architects who passed by as teachers, monitors or people of experience were few, although quite competent, few, however there were many other professionals in the sciences social, people linked to geography, sociology, history and so on. .

Then, when I faced the publications, literature and even the analysis of the city projects, I was left with a strange feeling, in the literature also the references were people linked to the field of social sciences, to the world of politics and some architects, in the other situations like the discussions of results happened the same, architects, few. At the end of my postgraduate course I decided to revise and update my knowledge every so often, look for authors that will help me understand the contemporary city, its complexities and future possibilities in order to have competences to take postgraduate classes that I had been offered and the same, architects, few.

My view on this subject, and perhaps the same thing happens in architecture, is that architects are not contributing to generate new thinking or fresh knowledge about the contemporary city, I think that is a field that architects could complement, revise, question and why not, to raise powerful speeches about the city, however, the architects are gradually being replaced by other professionals in the understanding, discussion and projections of the urban phenomenon.

I recently finished reading the book "Anthropology of the Urban" by Ariel Gravano, Editorial LOM of Chile, and I think I understood something new, the anthropologist in his book justifies the presence of anthropology in the analysis of the urban phenomenon, and also its active participation in the thinking the city, and gives reasons for this, all very worthy and I believe that the focus of anthropology on urban issues will continue to evolve and gain space, that being said, the book helped me to understand a fundamental issue, the city of the architects – (architect with planners knowledge), and that city that understands the social sciences seems that it is not the same city.

To expose my thesis, I must necessarily go to the training of architects, who know, for an architect, the constructed architectural reality, and for continuity the city, it is an invention, a product of the mind, a sum of architectural objects more or less in dialogue, or as the Chilean architect Smiljan Radic said at a conference in the city of Concepción, and to refer to his works: "my beasts", a sum of "beasts".

The city for the social sciences is an environment, a complex and unique network of interrelationships in which human life occurs, and in which phenomena such as identity with certain spaces and functions are hard material for analytical work, for a social scientist It does not seem to matter that a street, a square or even a referential urban space is the product of architectural thought, and that without these definitions there is simply nothing, for an architect in as much, it is a reality of space and forms that can change with everything that is inside, because in the architectural design scheme there is always the possibility, the latency or the potential of exploring new ways of living, of new ways of occupying space, of new ways of building and even of new forms of organization, this will depend among others on the compositional capacities, but above all imaginative, is a matter of imagination.

So things, I understand why in architecture linked to urbanism there are few studies on the post-occupation of projects, life in the spaces once they exist, and yes, a very good critique of new theoretical proposals and their contributions, this situation is a separation that seems somewhat irresponsible.
From my perspective as an architect, I look at the contemporary city and I look at it full of challenges, challenges linked to the experiences and interactions that take place there - and that I understand from my postgraduate training - but it also causes me the invention of a new city , paradigmatic, perhaps in the logic of Le Corbusier, although he can understand that it is easy to fall into the purest utopia, but falling into it is not a fatality, it is simply more material to be approached from architecture and social sciences.

The city of architects is a city that has incorporated all the history of architecture, from its monumentality, through its functionality, its structures, its spaces and forms, as well as its infrastructures and the beauty of its textures, colors and even scents It is a city that has a correlate linked to its inventions and statues that has made possible such spectacular cities as Paris, but Paris is already a fact, and although it exists it is reinventing itself day by day and to understand its metamorphosis, changes and new Challenges that generate projects requires dialogue with the social sciences.

I am worried that myself and my colleagues fall into the trap of imagining the shape of the car and its external parts, but not understand how the engine works because it has become very complex, including social conflicts, identities, experiences, the destruction of vital parts and other transformations, also the agonies and the losses that occur in the city's scenario, and with that we leave aside a fruitful dialogue to learn and teach.

Humanity will continue to advance, perhaps new social problems will appear, others will be solved or change shape, in these interactions the city as a container will become increasingly complex and challenging, both to create imaginative, new, refreshing and even paradigmatic spaces, products of the architectural mind, but today those ideas should be conscious and therefore linked to the whole web of connections, interactions and complexities made by the humans who inhabit it, that is, in dialogue with the knowledge provided by the social sciences.
