Arquitectos urbanistas y las ciencias sociales/Urban architects and the social sciences

Urban architects and the social sciences

A few years ago I went to Europe to study a postgraduate course on city subjects, I learned a lot in that program, and even today that knowledge they are valid, so I appreciate the effort of the academics who taught it, however, in the subjects I studied , urban policies, projects and city management, I was struck by the fact that the architects who passed by as teachers, monitors or people of experience were few, although quite competent, few, however there were many other professionals in the sciences social, people linked to geography, sociology, history and so on. .

Then, when I faced the publications, literature and even the analysis of the city projects, I was left with a strange feeling, in the literature also the references were people linked to the field of social sciences, to the world of politics and some architects, in the other situations like the discussions of results happened the same, architects, few. At the end of my postgraduate course I decided to revise and update my knowledge every so often, look for authors that will help me understand the contemporary city, its complexities and future possibilities in order to have competences to take postgraduate classes that I had been offered and the same, architects, few.

My view on this subject, and perhaps the same thing happens in architecture, is that architects are not contributing to generate new thinking or fresh knowledge about the contemporary city, I think that is a field that architects could complement, revise, question and why not, to raise powerful speeches about the city, however, the architects are gradually being replaced by other professionals in the understanding, discussion and projections of the urban phenomenon.

I recently finished reading the book "Anthropology of the Urban" by Ariel Gravano, Editorial LOM of Chile, and I think I understood something new, the anthropologist in his book justifies the presence of anthropology in the analysis of the urban phenomenon, and also its active participation in the thinking the city, and gives reasons for this, all very worthy and I believe that the focus of anthropology on urban issues will continue to evolve and gain space, that being said, the book helped me to understand a fundamental issue, the city of the architects – (architect with planners knowledge), and that city that understands the social sciences seems that it is not the same city.

To expose my thesis, I must necessarily go to the training of architects, who know, for an architect, the constructed architectural reality, and for continuity the city, it is an invention, a product of the mind, a sum of architectural objects more or less in dialogue, or as the Chilean architect Smiljan Radic said at a conference in the city of Concepción, and to refer to his works: "my beasts", a sum of "beasts".

The city for the social sciences is an environment, a complex and unique network of interrelationships in which human life occurs, and in which phenomena such as identity with certain spaces and functions are hard material for analytical work, for a social scientist It does not seem to matter that a street, a square or even a referential urban space is the product of architectural thought, and that without these definitions there is simply nothing, for an architect in as much, it is a reality of space and forms that can change with everything that is inside, because in the architectural design scheme there is always the possibility, the latency or the potential of exploring new ways of living, of new ways of occupying space, of new ways of building and even of new forms of organization, this will depend among others on the compositional capacities, but above all imaginative, is a matter of imagination.

So things, I understand why in architecture linked to urbanism there are few studies on the post-occupation of projects, life in the spaces once they exist, and yes, a very good critique of new theoretical proposals and their contributions, this situation is a separation that seems somewhat irresponsible.
From my perspective as an architect, I look at the contemporary city and I look at it full of challenges, challenges linked to the experiences and interactions that take place there - and that I understand from my postgraduate training - but it also causes me the invention of a new city , paradigmatic, perhaps in the logic of Le Corbusier, although he can understand that it is easy to fall into the purest utopia, but falling into it is not a fatality, it is simply more material to be approached from architecture and social sciences.

The city of architects is a city that has incorporated all the history of architecture, from its monumentality, through its functionality, its structures, its spaces and forms, as well as its infrastructures and the beauty of its textures, colors and even scents It is a city that has a correlate linked to its inventions and statues that has made possible such spectacular cities as Paris, but Paris is already a fact, and although it exists it is reinventing itself day by day and to understand its metamorphosis, changes and new Challenges that generate projects requires dialogue with the social sciences.

I am worried that myself and my colleagues fall into the trap of imagining the shape of the car and its external parts, but not understand how the engine works because it has become very complex, including social conflicts, identities, experiences, the destruction of vital parts and other transformations, also the agonies and the losses that occur in the city's scenario, and with that we leave aside a fruitful dialogue to learn and teach.

Humanity will continue to advance, perhaps new social problems will appear, others will be solved or change shape, in these interactions the city as a container will become increasingly complex and challenging, both to create imaginative, new, refreshing and even paradigmatic spaces, products of the architectural mind, but today those ideas should be conscious and therefore linked to the whole web of connections, interactions and complexities made by the humans who inhabit it, that is, in dialogue with the knowledge provided by the social sciences.

Espacio Público-The public space

The Public space

I have not written in my blog about architecture and urbanism, and above all, I have not written about urbanism, which is my specialty. In order to improve this situation, I will start a new stage by publishing a topic that seems fundamental to me. The public space.

My first approach to the public space was because some architectural projects that I have designed involved some management of the exterior architectural space, and beyond the work of architecture itself, its relationship with the rest of the spaces of the city was necessary, in that case my vision did not go beyond designing access, protections for users and green areas. On the other hand, I was a municipal architect for a while, but at that time I did not dominate the group of concepts that I know today and that if I knew, my actions would have had more impact.

Today we cannot talk about architecture without having clear notion of public space, I think this concept is one of the most important that have been incorporated into urban-architectural thinking in recent years.

During my postgraduate course I became aware of the importance of the concept and how proper management of it improves not only the project but the city and the quality of life of the people. The public space is a concept still in thought, and can be understood under a multi-disciplinary view, in it, urbanism through planning and urban design have a fundamental role, but also architecture and landscaping as configurators of same.

According to my understanding of the concept, there are at least eight characteristics of public space that should be kept in mind:

a.- It is an urban space with sociological characteristics: although it is a space with clearly urban dimensions, that is to say it is in the scale of the urban landscape and with it is part of the structure of spaces of the city, this is a place where things must happen including social interrelations and the sense of perceived security and therefore is a space to be appropriate, Jordi Borja's contributions on this aspect are fundamental.

b.- It is continuous: public space is not an isolated fact, it is a continuity with different expressions, with different scales and also with various configurations but it is a continuity always, and above all it is a network that has hierarchies.

c.- It is a space where citizenship is exercised: It is a flexible and scaled open space where every citizen can exercise their rights of occupation for the activities allowed by civic and normative life, in essence we the citizens have rights over that space with care not to remove the rights of others, therefore situations such as street trading can be allowed for a prudent period of time, not involving colonization or personal appropriation, on this vision, Jordi Borja's contributions are angular.

d.- Architecture is the main configurator, scales, delivers identity and ennobles public space: The morphologies and functionalities associated with architectural projects are fundamental for that public space can be read as such, so that concepts such as the "urban façade" can be understood, this is an active value, which allows us to conceive an idea of linked design of certain planes beyond the scale of architecture, is clearly an obligation to think about continuities.

e.- Sociability is the cornerstone of public space: without socialization, for example without the full presence of flows and stay situations, either because there are services, connections or offers of public interest, public space is a structure without a soul, it not is, therefore, managing its borders and delivering functions for all interests should be a concern of those who design, retrieve or postulate public space.

f.- Public space has identity: the identity of space is characterized by the elements that compose it, by those who shape it, by the symbolic elements it receives and especially by the scale it has, with it, the public space is one of more important members of what we capture as an urban image.

g.- It is symbolic and semiotic: All the urban space is symbolic, each of the spaces of urban scale that we find in the city can be read and retained for its symbolic aspects, among them the sum of the discourses of urban facades , none equal to another, and that they deliver a load of information that we synthesize in a symbolic frame, and even of that information, we apprehend at least one symbolic element that we identify as own of the particular space. But it is also semiotic, because every signifier that makes it, implies a proper reading and meaningful for who lives it.

h.- Has quality: Contemporary public space is not the green area, it is a space endowed with quality components, its most important requirement being its quality in design, based on one or several ideas, strength or idea of work and with contributions of beauty, nobility and good decisions that should be clear and relevant, then their components such as pavements, small sized architectural elements, vegetables and urban furniture for age use should be of quality.

Finally, the concept of public space is now very complex, because to start from Jane Jacobs in "Death and life of the big cities" there are several authors who have contributed to give clarity and better understanding to the concept in order to improve the quality of urban life, and as a promotion to the quality of "citizen" in the sense of feeling ownership of the city, however, the spaces known as POPs, the "public" privately owned spaces are also part of the continuities.

REFERENTES / THE ARCHITECTURAL REFERENCE

REFERENTES

THE ARCHITECTURAL REFERENCE

There are several architectural theorists who say that something can be called “architecture” only when we built , when there is a "work" of architecture, when it is a fact that calls a materiality and real space. Some speeches even go so far as the case of the architect Mario Botta which states that there is no architecture, only works of architecture. This considers that any other ideation that may have run into the discussion, in the plane, in sketches or even three-dimensional model is not really architecture. This position become a fundamental idea and quite necessary to understand that at the end of the day, architecture is a livable place , and that to do architecture , we must raise a challenging work of building temporary conditions in the reality we perceive as such.

I estimate because my years like a teacher that the majority the academy is also think the same, the rest of the work done there are only simulations, approaches at the phenomenon , abstractions , but we could not call architecture. Based on this condition, the following condition, like a condition immediate a kind of reaction is to understand that architecture is written in the tectonic or estereotomic of the real forms , accumulating there similar to the book sheet, a compendium of knowledge on architecture located in the urban or rural , similar to the sum of writings by different authors to show their beliefs on their understanding of architecture, this in time and space.

Another interesting idea that we can add to this stage, is the presumption - correctly in my point of view - that the theory of architecture is embedded in works of architecture, because if we accept that these discourses have ideas of architectural thought forces which bind coherently all demands, claims, challenges and determinants imposed reality and interests demand that obviously there, arranged in the play there registered more than a fundamental concept.

Following the above ideas , we have the concept of reference, the reference amounts to a kind of work built with special characteristics , in practical terms it is a source of information contains mistakes and successes of course , the stuff of architecture, but which identifies the special work certainties regarding their foundations , and thus make contact with the ethos of architecture, with fundamental knowledge if this is possible , it is then a considerably valuable input for architectural thinking and development and advancement .

The questions that arise in this scheme are several, for example are all of the existing architectural works, and are they a reference? or , all of them contribute to think about the phenomenon? , the professional works, they are all valuable? . We build a framework of questions based on one main idea might be: what we understand as a reference?

I've written some ideas earlier about the importance of bourgeois little hotel as the quintessence of architecture that conforms unpretentious urban contexts often unforgettable , there are cities that are full of these works and are quite dear and well evaluated by citizens and can become milestones relating to works and heritage , but is that which serves to move forward ?

Apparently not, these are works that take resources spent and his modesty and build their speeches go on familiar roads , which is not essentially a mistake, just do not assume risk or explore something and therefore do not move ahead, their justification can be very logical and grounded, but calm and reflective evaluation come to constitute the group of works which we understand are the great background of this field , the " more of the same" .

According the reception by specialists, judges, experts and people related to the architecture, and performance testing of its users and context, and a trace sustainable discourse, a reference is somewhat different.

The architectural reference is essentially a single work, a work that has reached some consensus that the thought that made it possible considered more or less fair dose of responses to the variables that they face, and in some cases, reached a certain level of genius, is very clear, the work stands above the rest
To contextualize its significance now we must say that in the teaching of architecture's theoretical claims from thinking about in the training , there are other questions arise that require explanations , demands that need to rely on a theory of architecture, and maybe there are other considerations and criteria around rationality that must be present in architectural competitions , probably , for some architect to deal responsibly when their face its own works , it would be advisable to review theoretical, that to the extent of its space , its willingness and the demands that they faces. We understand then that the referent is theory, knowledge is a source of information, and much needed.

The proximity of the student with the architectural reference is crucial because it is part of their theoretical training , a theory to be learned , but they have to work for it, because unlike traditional disciplinary theoretical frameworks , the conceptual information serving and is valid only in the context for which it was designed , but there is a conceptual information that can be treated as solid knowledge and allows the student and professional certainties build your own exercises .

The level of understanding of the student or practitioner regarding the information contained in the related theoretical, can be displayed in the following graph :

see graph in Spanish above

1.-Reading is from the bottom up, the student in a first insight into the early courses of architecture is an initiate, and its relation to the referent is quite limited, almost nonexistent.

2.- At an elementary level of their training , vision allows the opening of its focus to include a greater share of the work, therefore, that ability leads to understanding the use of variables, at least one , usually the morphological .

3.- In a third stage, training, focus opening providing you progress in your training is somewhat higher, therefore the theoretical information that can extract the reference is clearly higher , more complex , and increases their ability to raise questions that seek answers on the referent, the latter condition , is another of the capabilities in the game.

4.- At the professional level , the opening of the vision of the architectural reference is much higher , the quality and quantity of the question increases and reached the level of certainty . Note that here, to this professional level is producing " more of the same " to the next level , work in architecture in this level, except for the genius, can be quite complex .

¿HUYEN LOS ARQUITECTOS DE LAS MATEMÁTICAS? / ¿DO ARCHITECTS FLEE FROM MATHEMATICS?

¿DO ARCHITECTS FLEE FROM MATHEMATICS?

This is a question that’s complicating me, at first I did not see it so clear, but there are certain indications in the programs of architecture schools that demonstrate at least the idea of reducing, or perhaps to ease more, or make more "bearable", all subjects related to mathematics and physics. In another area, in the professional world I mean, I have architects friends who brag themselves about not having any contact with mathematics, because it is a fact of the subject that in the professional environment is not hard to find anti-math architects, a derived position from having done the math and/or physics courses at least twice during their student life, meaning that there is a certain resistance to such topic.

To start a reflection on this issue, first I must say that there is still "something" that distinguishes architects and that might be considered as a special capability, I dare say almost mythical, because as far as I have understood there is no study known, or otherwise evidences, that explains that capacity; it is the ability to relate shamelessly and without complex two worlds that in any other conditions are almost never to meet interact with one another. On one hand we have the world of the senses, of that which is perceived without much prior knowledge, for we are sensitive beings to any expression, contact or demonstration that our senses can capture therefore without further explanation; and on the other hand, the rational world, that world where we find disciplines and concerns based on reason, among them mathematics, physics and deductive thinking, that is, the world of the explanations. In its university formation an architect gets a good dose of both worlds, and must constantly fight with his brain that tends to stay in one of the sides, for on one hand it should appeal to all of your skin and sensory capabilities, and on the other, to the full potential of the rational part.

One of the most powerful influences in architecture in recent times is the rational-theoretical side of architecture with Le Corbusier, the Swiss-French architect was a lover of the machine and led a worldwide movement appealing to the reason of students and architects alike; it seems that today it is losing its most important battle, the influence of reason- from a logic conception view -in architecture. Known are his ideas on architecture posed as a rational and self-creation of man as opposed to the natural world, or his unsurpassed proposed Cartesian separation of functions, dwell, circular (CIAM) work and play. His rational thinking is in full evidence and kept away from any sensualist breeze that could relax him in his discourse on housing trends, a position that today may be unsustainable, by which housing is conceived as a purely functional and standard product and that came to support the idea of a machine for living.

If the withdrawal of mathematics from the programs, or the so-called study plans leading to the professional title of architect , occurs it look to me as an error of proportions, it would be like fragmenting into pieces a fundamental part of architectural ethos, something like directly attacking and in a suicidal attempt one of the Vitruvian principles, the firmitas, and retain some unusable remains in addition to the venustas and the utilitas and, in that road, we are finally left with the utilitas or perhaps only the venustas because we could not understand the others, a sort of stagehand.

I have no problems with the sets, entities without further commitments of rationality, even when they wear cities as the case of the city of Las Vegas in the U.S., but it seems to me that all required technical support in order to complete the idea, or ideas, that give birth to a work of architecture and it’s technical support, really lie in mathematics, which among other things, contribute to it’s necessary grounding architectural thinking.

I do not know if math is an invention or a discovery as apparently Plato believed, perhaps it’s just a way of thinking and nothing more, but nature, the maximum expression in terms of creation - by the way, if we do not complicate ourselves with idea of God and considering that it’s not a matter of discussion in these articles - is mathematical, and if we want to insert there our inventions, these must also be somehow grounded in mathematical language.

I am concerned; it may be utopian to think that one of the cerebral hemispheres is getting rid of the competences of the other as we become architects, it is possible to visualize such things in other areas of knowledge, therefore, and although more contemporary studies show that there is full compatibility of our cerebral hemispheres and consequently no dissociation, we could assume that if logic, language, mathematics and any other coding of our architectural thinking are cast aside, then we're flying to the into pure meditation, but then we enter into the most brutal of contradictions, since architecture is quite the opposite, it’s action.

For some time I have listened to the academic idea that an architect should only have criteria regarding structures, ie in applied physics, this means building certain smart convictions that would allow architects to act in the world of forms without having to go into the boring calculations. This idea sounds good, but it is a fallacy if it is not understood before hand and in some depth and abstract dimension the behavior of physical forces "on/over and in/within", the forms, or at least have taken regular and systemic courses about the materials resistance and structures calculus, and of course, we found math in them.

Another interesting approach is to look at the future, the world of potential forms and perhaps all the complex geometries we can assume and pre-see so far as our sight can go, are already being explored today with so called ITC - Information of technology and communication – which are in short mathematical speeches, whether they are volumes, shells or planes, thus, every thought associated in that creative direction and media will be undoubtedly, and copulatively, a highly intuitive – creative thinking, but also a mathematical thinking; that is to an extent in which it can represent what you think, otherwise, it will not be architecture, but a machine language.

It appears that for some architects, including some good friends of mine, tend to forget the issue of supporting structures, of the physical forces they call on their architectural objects and also to conveniently sail away from materials strength and structural skeletons, in synthesis of math itself; I’ts rad, I’ts cool, in this position some think that the spirit is released and with that we touch the sky, but to me, this sounds like pure foam.

This issue poses a concern, there is certainly no debate on such subjects, but it is also true that there is no discussion of the architectural theme at all, sounds like a “pipe dream” an entelechy for example to wonder , as in the past, about what is architecture? And how complex it may be, and above all, how much does architecture really matter to the society we live in? Among these, there are other questions that I tried to solve in an essay called "The importance of the umbrella" text that I cannot yet publish.

GOODBYE TO COMMON SENSE?

For a while now, I have followed with interest the state of things in architecture; I have seen on the Internet the situation of architects in many parts of the world, everywhere there is some sort of disappointment, perhaps a questioning about the future of the discipline. In Spain for example, due to the economic and financial problems, it is estimated that about 40% of the architects are unemployed, moreover several articles have appeared in the digital media that makes the concern of many architects, because of the low wages that their architect work earns them, clear.

Everything shows that becoming an architect today, with certain exceptions, is not a good business. Architecture demands long working hours, many “always ready” capabilities and its retribution is often squalid; but that is not the only aspect of concern in the current situation. For a long time too, some serious essayists have been highlighting the problem of handling the discipline’s knowledge’s, and even the way architecture is taught. There are few who point out with red lights, that it requires research, to generate new knowledge, to provide input from the academy and especially try and reach a common language.

From my perspective, I have argued that architecture today has a lot of deep convictions, that it is personally taking a position that involves a personal walk/growth, but that those individual paths are not necessarily shared by others.

From my point of view, trying to understand what happens with architecture, or at least trying to understand why it is having trouble in positioning itself in the platform of the necessary disciplines, (socially accepted and valued) both socially and economically, is more like a suicide problem than an external attack.

Architecture is committing suicide, and is a long process that may have started after the fall of the dogmas of the modern movement, although there are some who argue that this comes from the separation of the architectural thought. Admittedly, the modern movement made a huge effort to build a unifying discourse, international and also technically, a giant platform that had some strength and a very good theoretical performance.

After falling however, nothing came, only scattered speeches, personal ideas manifested in singular or rare architectures, the occasional theoretical effort and then emptiness, an unfillable void; therefore anything ready and trying to respond to it, to it’s accurate attack, suicide attack, simply falls apart.

What is leading architecture to suicide?, I think one of the most controversial practices ,and perhaps one of the more incident one, is the abandonment of common sense. There is not only in practice, but in the theoretical approach, a sense of escape regarding to common sense, which is no small thing, it is to abandon the ship that allows everything to stay afloat.

Common sense is perhaps the least common of the senses, but you can see when it is and when its needed, that is to say, it is a way of acting that at least leaves evidence and therefore it is possible to evaluate the reasons of certain actions, thereby giving rise to the understanding of such action by means of one’s own common sense.

Both in architectural teaching and in professional level, international and local, we can see some sign, that without further analysis indicate some erratic associated behavior of those who lose their north, that is to say, those who lose their compass which from my point of view, is just common sense.

Recovering certain direction/focus patterns, apparently, is not an easy feat and I think it requires a consensus with some urgency, a consensus that enables us to have certain clarity on the basic pillars of the architecture, on the universally accepted theories, on some visions of the future, on certain concentration centers of knowledge or global hub’s, and about conferences where the progress in architecture related areas are exposed…basically to open the doors to research once and for all.

Without prejudice that can have an attitude like a whole, I find necessary that personal reflection is made both in lecture and at work about how far we are from common sense in our work, so probably, we might have a better contact with our customers and external reviewers and thereby achieve a better position.

THESE ANTAGONISTIC TREND

Looking at how rude and making a fairly arbitrary generality of what architects do today, I believe we can visualize two antagonistic tendencies inside the minds of the architects, and which one of them apparently is winning the game, but his triumph is leaving the battlefield many corpses, say beautiful architectural corpses.
Probably the architect is always a kind of singularity, "a poisonous mixture of impotence and omnipotence, because the architect harbors megalomaniacal dreams, but to carry them out depends on other people and circumstances" Rem Koolhaas said in conversations with students.

If we observe carefully the architectural production of those renowned contemporary masters, say those who do not have the grace to know but we know about them in magazines, interviews and works extensively treated, one may see a trend that is reflected in its architectural chores and realize their passion, since my approach is that tendency to unleash their megalomaniacal dreams, build their mental images and realize their own fetishes.

Some time ago, the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo wrote in an essay entitled "Against indifference as standard, Anyway" some ideas where it showed the importance of the values assumed as contextual and site properties, the values of the identity, of culture, of what exists, suggesting that it does not matter the context in architectural thought, and thus highlights a way of thinking and making architecture, in this case the architecture and construction of place, Moneo concerned architecture that respects cultural values, identity, ancestral techniques, in short, to what precedes in existence.

The opposite in the work and thought of the architects started very early as the history of architecture and construction in reality comes when separated vernacular architecture, which is designed without architects and resulting from a combination of specific factors, the practice and culture, and architecture born by architects, architecture that has a name, an author, an architect thinking, an ego.

In the opposite corner, we could locate the reflection on the culture to understand the thinking about the place and its importance in the work of architecture, these good intentions were coined and possibly settled in academia have used discourse in classrooms and workshops, and many architects really assume, as disclosed and believe it.

This trend takes a load of humility and easily capture reflective thinking student of architecture and architects perhaps some low notoriety, and the effect is that works of architecture produced under that trend melt easily in urban magma, then the work, say the building becomes a brick in the context in which it is being provided to some extent is to die to give life to new urban spaces, bounded, in contexts of pedestrian scale, a discreet but friendly with the shape of the urban setting.
I feel that these architects may have something in that attitude of mind suicide, because these small contributions to the contexts in which they are placed end up city that works themselves, part of a whole, summations of the value chain of the place, but in no means a light emitting own uniqueness.

On the opposite sidewalk, personalism has done its part, and has been a resounding success not only now, is historical. Their success may have the applause of those architects who see this way of doing architecture their own megalomaniacal dreams of rockstar, dreams of giving form and color to the world without explaining to anyone.
The architect is very discreet, perhaps even mediocre, looking to his works speak for him and in that sense has a solid platform to raise his speech, and that speech is part of his understanding of beauty and an individual move colonization the total space, but also incorporates more complex, a stone in the construction of its staff “metamundo”.

Indicated trends we noticed in the work of contemporary architect, perhaps in a thick, coarse analysis can be classified into two streams then as strong, egocentric and topocentric, one serving the ego and building “metamundos” own and only subject technological advances, and the other trying to fight to build location based on existing values, among others many subject, the culture.

Recalling the words of Koolhaas -, "... the architectural practice and depends on other circumstances - therefore, if given the circumstances and the others agree, you can always drop builders “metamundos” demons because all we have.

We said that a trend is gaining in the internal struggle in the intellect of the architects, so many cities are witnessing today in a lavish spectacle, a kind of sculpture park, a landscape covered with singularities that have nothing to do with each yes, that nothing unites creatures except the egos of their creators, Dubai reminds me, that architecture reigns gaining ground not only in discourse and scholarly journals, but in the applause of the architects, something sad.

Contemporary architecture is full of fetishes, playful ways that appeal to their creators and the recreate it over and over and over again, no matter where, no matter the weather, no matter what the program, no matter the culture, no matter actually nothing, not even the budget, this architecture is the product of a self-centered view, is knocking out the old discourse context and wise teachers.

Introduced as a researcher in the professional disciplines of any area of knowledge is introduced in handling variables, each profession has developed methods, tools and expertise to deal with the variability of the phenomena of its competence.
Variables are somewhat separate representative, segmented and real-world analytical; phenomenological each event can be represented by a synthesis of instrumental variables that call.

Inherently represent data variables, but the language in which the data are arranged involves knowledge to understand the information and work with them, it also means just because of addressing the condition of play with values to meet assumptions or estimates as generalities, can think then that variables are to be unknowns whose handling requires specific knowledge.

Make architecture, studying architecture and subjected to analysis existing works is in my opinion a work with variables, thus architecture can understand each other explanations, such as intelligent resolution of an equation. Solving an architectural problem may involve committing to a huge number of variables, here is how complex it can be to produce a good work, but I must say that the solution of some key variables can lead to the solution of other minor variables without even having stopped to think about them, there is a group of architecture variables that are more important than others and that fall exclusively to architectural thinking, because in that "other", there is always help, and even better handling external expertise.

The synthesis architecture has developed from the nineteenth century to propose an answer to the unknowns, or the handling of variables and can be serviced and the game is generally reflected in a general party variables of the architecture-say those of jurisdiction - should always be resolved.

If we delve into the many aspects which have to make decisions in a complex work of architecture, we could face a real mental stress, however, depending on the complexity and size of the work, a number of other disciplines come to our aid then the specialties appear.

In my concept of architecture and resorting to a mature reflection of it, there are actually four variables there are formidable on which the architect have full competition, these variables are greater than if they were not resolved or defined in the equation, there would certainly much less subject architecture on which further work, this is the group of variables that define the architecture, which give their ethos, that make a work to be different from others, ie the solution architecture problem has varied results, certainly some better than others, it is involved in the talent and perhaps the genius of the author or team, and comes to be one of my points of support to affirm that architecture is not only a simply occupation

The variables identified as typical of architectural thinking are the architectural space, the space, the morphology or the definition of the forms, the morphology, the function as a variable basis and gives meaning to the work, in the thought of Vitruvius the utilities, and the place, the latter understood as the conjunction of space and time (Hegelian vision), and that are profoundly changed, for better or worse by the work of architecture, this variable is also known as "ambient".

Above all else there is outside help, and several complex variables of architecture and probably committed it may sound as proper hermeneutics of architecture, like light, come to be under the tutelage of the design space, same styles that could be internalized by morphologically variable or variables with which addresses the issue of environmental sustainability as well, then many of the unknowns variables come to resolved like a kind of vortex once definitions major are met.

I believe that there is no way to disarm the strong dependency between these four major unknowns, the main variables of architecture, to solve one, at least it is strongly affecting the other, and there the complex meccano that students architecture discover when start to solve their projects.

Looking back by searching a secret formula, or asking for a master key to solve the equation, I think that is one, and that requires a degree of clarity that is not always achieved, it is the architectural idea, the idea, a kind of inspiration only works when reaching a complete mastery of the parties involved in the project, this mean a kind of definition of these key variables in mind, an issue that requires much training.
