EXCURSIONES SOBRE EL ESPACIO /EXCURSIONS ON THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE

The symbiotic relationship space- natural light in architectural spaces

I think the concept of architectural space is impoverished enough if the pure concept, architectural space, which is an idea associated with the abstraction of a portion of reality, deprived of something fundamental to their condition, their symbiotic relationship with natural light. Perhaps you could separate the good works of those bad works if we review the relationship between space and natural light. Natural light in architecture is always habitability factor and dimensional capture, but I think more importantly, is the sensory perception of living space, a sense of living space.
The relationship architectural space - natural light can range from a few degrees to a maximum degree, which means that the light could be one of the good parameter to differentiate spatial quality. When you have the experience or the experience of being in the huge Gothic spaces of medieval churches in Europe, has the feeling of not being in a space suitable for human living, as well as its dimensions, somethings different architectural space that characteristic of Gothic churches, and any other space worked with light doses below a certain range that makes it stressful, overwhelming or alienating just as in the case of the Berlin Jewish Museum.
Work, study and even to stay a few hours at a space with poor natural light conditions is completely overwhelming welcome, even with the efforts of contemporary lighting technology, there is a feeling of dull environment unfit for living in some artificial spaces making architecture, let alone confined spaces such as warehouses, cinemas or bunkers, the idea that transience is inherent in these spaces.
On the other hand, experience tells us that if the gradual light in architectural spaces have a high level, the situation is uncomfortable, stifling, blinding and protection required for a condition of comfort, there's a thin line which suggests that is in the correct amounts and that beyond it, the quality of space is impoverished, I would assume also that for a blind person, there are perceptions that they feel the presence of light, probably the heat, or speculating, the sounds of light.
The key to proper management of natural light in architectural spaces, in my point of view, is not only in the provision of plans conforming to the space, but another factor not always well thought of architecture projects, fenestration or windows design and building.
When I look at my past projects, I keep thinking how aware I went to study or manage this relationship, because a more accurate dose of natural light, the greater the resulting quality of the design space, in addition to watching some good contemporary works, I realize that the subtlety in the handling of this factor can reach levels of genius. An architect has always struck me is the Portuguese Alvaro Siza, who has a loving relationship with the forms, contained spaces, the contexts in which to place their works, but mostly by how it treats the natural light and its relationship of complicity with white.
The dose of natural light to the inner drive Siza of his works could be perhaps the best measure of a good piece of architecture, in these works is a space dependent quarry captured the total space and light also trapped with him, in short, what the architect does is a job hunting and life imprisonment of natural light, the question arises: who can do that better than an architect?, here I conclude that Light has to architects special coding, is finally in architectural condition of hermeneutics.
What might be concluded from this tour is we cannot call that space architectural space that do not have any natural light dose, we can probably talk about working space, functional, or subject to other cases.
Clearly the capabilities of contemporary architecture to capture the natural light thanks to improved technology, it is visible when looking at the history of architecture evolution, because today are possible higher doses of natural light in architectural spaces, but the trap is in symbiotic balance, the right dose, because in many works are sacrificed significant environmental aspects as well, usually requiring an artificial overdose technological manipulation that leads away from the work of the architect's control, and then gives way to an army of specialists correcting the environmental errors of a sick room, because it seems natural that the same light that gives life to the architectural space, also can kill it.

ARCHITECTURAL SPACE

The architectural space is one of those concepts of architecture that is always under review, it is essential to understand when studying, and to the extent that it is a synthesis of abstract works in the mind of the architect, is also a critical notion of each architectural approach to some extent, all architectural works theorizes about the concept.

Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) German philosopher conceived the idea of space as an expression of place, estimated that space and time do not exist separately, further defines the possibility of understanding the absolute space from the generation of planes defined by a line moving.

Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) seeks rulers and laws defined in the art to understand the space, architecture as art and art is space. (contemporary with Violet Le Duc).

Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921) The concept of space is linked to a dynamic view also close, analytical, scientific, three-dimensional that it crosses with constant movement a building and this action joint the presence of the senses. (The space as a sensory experience)

Shmarsow August (1853-1936) postulated a theory of art, it raises the idea of interior space, or the content "the essence of interior space, it is the living soul of the architectural creation ". Specifically the idea of Carl Stumpf on the notion of unified space, continuous and deep that is acquired by experience and connected by the human body in horizontal and vertical positions. This approach is fundamental to understanding the architectural reasoning about space today. The space idea created by Shmarzow is related to the following: the vertical and the ratio is typical of the sculpture, the horizontal and the width is inherent to the painting, and the third dimension, depth, direction and rhythm is itself architecture. Shmarzow finally believes that the history of architecture is the evolution of the sense of space.

Alois Riegl (1858-1905) estimated that the desire for shapes in architecture is reflected in the modeling of space. Surprises with its position that the architecture has a monopoly on space, it is like a monopoly on a phenomenal fact that man develops his life.

Sigfried Giedion (1888-1968) Hungarian, established contacts with the Bauhaus, his theory that holds up today, is based on two key concepts: a global and unifying idea of space-time set by the movement, and secondly the impact of technology and mechanization in the evolution of the arts, among them the architecture. Position the idea of an evolution in the work space from outer space or volume, the internal space and the relationship between them.

Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) recognizes the nature of human existence and the existential nature of human space, arguing that there is space and cannot dissociate the space and the man, understands that space is neither an external object or an inner experience and places the man and the space next to each other.

José Ricardo Morales, (1915) presents a lucid definition that the man is an architectural creature, and therefore must create an architectural order that is binding with a sense of personal space and functional to establish and understand the world, and is directed to turn it, this position is complemented by another fundamental idea posed by Morales, the man built an architectonic space, extracting it from the total space, a kind of quarry.

Christian Norberg - Schulz (1926-2000) One of the most important theorists of the twentieth century, concentrates its efforts in unifying intellectual positions around the architecture, including the coordination of all parties and as an existential space, so therefore not comparable to a surgical study or abstract, ie, the early influence of Heidegger's existentialism, his definition of space is more concerned to capture space and individual assimilation therefore not expected to hold more positions purists, formal and intellectual space.

Hall, Edward Twitchell (1914 -) theory of proxemics inside the book “ the hidden dimension", where the perception of space it is constantly changing according to proximity factors (intimate space, social space and public space), under this reading concept the space cannot be static, is inherently dynamic and is related to our location inside it, the perception of it limits our personal conception of the relationship with others. The most important feature of this work show that the space is always in relation with human behavior.

Some ideas:

The spatial structures generated by the architecture need to be linked and understood from the existential reality, is about building an axiom that expects a response from the existential and therefore the expectation of results based on human behavior and the known, the own, and the self-reference.

Some authors such as Christian Norberg Schulz distinguish an apart system of space from the concrete situation to pure abstraction:

Pragmatic space: inside this space occurs the action, space in which it operates, the concept integrates and relates the vacuum separated from the whole, it supports the organics occupation and his behaviors.
Perceptual space: it is the space for an immediate guidance, it is the perceived space and is essential to the identity of being and consciousness of being separate from everything.
Existential Space. it is the space, which is a continuum around us and that among other things, makes us belong to a social and cultural totality.
Cognitive space: in the physical world, is a concept that involves thinking about space.
Expressive or artistic space: it is the space created by man to express his speech in the world, a transmissible form and legible for others. The architectural space arises under these concepts as an expressive space, and like all expressive space, its creation is the task of specialists, builders, architects and planners.
The aesthetic space: it is the intellectual abstractión systematizing the properties of possible expressive spaces. The aesthetic space is studied by theoretical architecture.
Logical space: it is the abstract space of logical relations, which provides the tool to describe the other spaces and is to be convened by the analysis of pure abstraction.

The architectural space is understandable to human beings on the basis of displacement from studies Giedion, Norbet Schulz presents a thesis still not contradicted, the notion of existential space, this notion is built on a pre-existing knowledge base, differentiated psychologically and topologically sorted.

The idea of space is significantly important for understanding the evolution of architecture, in such a degree of commitment, progress can be identified in the concern to sculpt the space with shapes (Eduardo. Chillida) more and more evolved.

No man dissociated existential space and vice versa, this can be understood as that, which is to man the image stable surrounding environment, makes it all belong to a social and cultural

The topological spatial analysis of Norbert Schulz provides parameters that characterize the spatial relationships between them, proximity, separation, succession, closure and continuity, but while this approach to understanding the dynamics in the perception of space is important, does not account the relationship of identity, other perceptual aspects present in the architectonic space

The architectural space is only important when the human presence to perceive it and there is a time for it.

It is curious that after studying architecture, dreaming of changing the world, among other activities of my career, today I am a "professor of architecture." Come to my mind many memories of past events, in which battered the architecture professor, teacher workshop, today I am one of them.

During this time that I have been teaching I've been observing the process by which an architect in the workshops, and I can be visualized in this process - which links students and teachers with knowledge of architecture - a zigzag path running through the students who might consider teaching stages, up to final way and leave the nest, then looking back they realize that there are conflicts in teaching, there are views and above all these deep convictions in this process is not following a script that makes architects, but rather it is an obstacle course where in each segment must be reoriented, in extreme cases, this can lead some students to be perplexed at the end of the road, something serious.
The architecture workshop is one of those things that are hard to define, as so many in architecture, it is ultimately a process that involves a certain complicity, a way of understanding the knowledge that there are many loose ends, and of course that is part of the idea is not possible to fill all the spaces that whoever does an architect and is what will stamp their unique architecture, its commitment to architectural education architecture does not build clones of the teacher.
In my reflection on the other actor, professor-teacher-architect, I find least three types of teachers. Consequently, least three types of speeches, all well-meaning and all based on a commitment to architecture.
A first teacher faces the teaching process as a guide, a kind of guiding from the remoteness of the project, with more questions than answers, does not intrude beyond allowing an invisible fence that is clear, when their answers are general, somewhat hesitant, a broad answer for perceived problems in the project. This teacher- architect sets his path, if I may say so, by a deep conviction that makes him believe that architecture is on, or inside the student, in his intellect, in his own reflection, and that any foreign contaminant can reach complicating matters. A curious debate about the question can be taught architecture, asks teachers posed by architect Peter Eisenman to his colleague Wolf D. Prix in a normal session of the workshop in a well-known video circulating on the Internet, I think that this question comes from this type of teaching.
A second teacher, who among the students enjoyed a certain popularity, is that trains, conveying with great enthusiasm, his deep convictions about what it is, what does and how does the architecture and in its final conception, estimated safely that architecture is a practical occupation, a definite and almost pedestrian to understand the resolution of a problem, and for this there are a number of proven solutions and ways known, and therefore hold past experiences, their own or others, is to give "something" that when studying architecture greatly appreciated, certainty.
A third teacher, is found in one teacher who taught architecture, and teaches certain subjects that are possible to transmit at a conceptual level quite acceptable, and their oriented towards reflection, to the cognitive development of a theoretical bases to support the proposal architecture, therefore the whole speech about architecture , texts by authors such as Norberg Schulz, Robert Venturi, Joseph Muntañola, Neil Leach, and other notorious authors are parts of the intellectual battery enabling architecture firm and sure step on this path. What is behind the effort of this kind of teacher is looking beyond the ubiquitous image photo journals and monographs. We are looking for intellectual sustenance for their work, this search is in the profound conviction that inside the architecture knowledge there is intellectual marrow, and therefore it is possible be taught.
I think that notwithstanding that there are other kinds of teachers and speeches that the combination of the three types of teachers -one who guide, one who trains or one who teaches - is possible in the deep convictions as to what architecture means, do not ndermine the chances less esteemed

ESCENARIOS ACTUALES Y LA FORMACIÓN DE LOS ARQUITECTOS (Parte 3 final )

THE WAY OF THE LOCAL

The current way of teaching in schools of architecture that could be defined as "procedural and doctrinal bases" dating from the 50s, when the dogma of functionalism and certain certainties empirical and rationality linked to the actions delineated academic job of architecture, still use these practices is not objectionable in itself, but are stale compared to contemporary demands to be addressed by the architecture.

There are some reason to think that some approaches to the sociological aspects are neccessary, but they are not present in teaching, for example a thorough discussion regarding performing contemporary science, especially the social sciences, it is probably necessary to address concepts and methods of the theoretical concepts related to personal and public safety, improve, and why not lead the environmental agenda, looking for a properly position in the problems of the "local", collect in certain areas the news experiences and investigation results as a survival strategy and contribution to knowledge, and to get methodologies and knowledge associated with the management of resource and economy, in synthesis, it exhausting, but necessary.

In the tangled task of skills, which can not be done could mean to leave professional land and it may be occupy by others, the muscle should be strengthened where necessary, this can lead to change the view in the architectural education, but before requires introspection, reflection, To know that it is the strong thing that we have, what is what to proper to sustain, enhance and maintain the current circumstances?.

EDUCATION CHALLENGES

There are many challenges positioned like a complex problematics to solve around the current situation to the teaching of architecture, this suggests that the task of studying the learning processes should always be monitoring what happens in practice because this is where to be born at least the main directions of improvements and changes.

Relations between the teaching and the pragmatism of the architecture, the foundation of this writing, is not good and I think the situation can be improved by addressing the teaching of architecture, from three fundamental aspects of the practice, the first shows that are necessary to make change in terms of finished the academic reductionism that removes variables (from the real world) to the process of architectural analysis and design, to improve and strengthen the link with reality through the so-called "hard data" this means addressing a wider range in the conceptualization, not necessarily architectural rather one that is qualified like product of the interdisciplinary vision, this way, the complex stage described could postulates a strong relationship "creative- hard data "in the broadest sense of both concepts, it necessarily leads to complex thinking, improve information search and making architecture and urban design from a much more informed position.

A second factor that deserves to be fundamental, is the status display of meaning and rationale of the proposed architecture from a perspective based on realistic evaluation, it is called profitability. Today unprofitable works do not exist, the practice shows lacks professional argument from the architects around this critical subject and it is due to not crossing conceptual discipline and the professional practice, but it is a requirement that will early with the harsh reality, but there are more, and the profitability of their own time in the best position to handle the concept and its implications.

A third factor, which could put the architect in a better position relative to its peers is the skill to design methodologies, design who requires methodological approaches to a comprehensive understanding of the task was to meet, it conditions a way of thinking is able to separate the grain from the straw, capacity that is now much diminished and in some cases, points to the contrary, it increases the straw and the grain tends to disappear.

Though that there are other key factors to attend to, there are also topics where to turn, it might be suggested that those listed below, are to some extent their own agendas of the current situation and come from a pragmatic analysis of the same, and if you have the will to improve, they should call the attention on the training of architects:

creativity: There is nothing to show that in a changing environment, full of problems, creativity is not only a useful, necessary and urgent resource, originality, constructive imagination, divergent thinking is being lost in the schools of architecture, there is not conscious and sufficient training program, but could finally be the only resource that allows architects placed in the context of contemporary maelstrom, and from there location design solutions.

security: The search for security, personal and collective should transform our view of living in buildings and how to use public spaces, in addition to compromising living elsewhere in natural or artificial, involving architects, according to some authors, This would compromise the architecture and urbanism of this century.

energy: renewable energy management, management of the conceptualization of the management of energy, advanced management work on energy expenditure is required for any professional in the field of architecture, the application of knowledge about privacy, self -sustaining energy, power generation, exploitation of natural resources, etc. should be on the agenda of training, not only as working with knowledge and accepted, exploration and research as well.

participation: the growing conflict in the world is a clear indicator that the arrow is associated with development of participation in a proportional relationship, more development, education and culture of the people, is also more demand for participation. Despite the ups and downs for Latin American democratic processes in general and Chile in particular, by more democratization process, should have more participation in all types of projects affecting the population, one may suspect that the architects have critical roles as part and counterpart achieve training associated with the genesis of each project could be a plus in practice.

self-management: The role of the professional can have an overview of the problems has an advantage in management, the evidence points that will require adequate training in management, for example knowledge of techniques, methodologies, planning and skills which complement the training and achieve their own objectives, collective technical, political or any kind of goal.

interdisciplinary linking : it is very necessary inside the stage described because is unthinkableby the architect going to retire to the life of the academic enviroment without having to interact strongly with other disciplines who will discuss, suggest, push and managed to get to impose their views. (the economy case). This suggests that it is necessary to know other languages, other ways to synthesize manage contexts, and learn methods of interaction among professionals, otherwise it could stay at a disadvantage result of lack of information, which at the time that we (information age) is unjustifiable.

local development: based on the comparative advantages that always have the territories, local development definitely requires specialists who understand on what basis is constructed their own development, it is essential in the context of globalization, because the balance between identity, strengths, relationships, protection, exploitation of resources and communication among others, is sensitive issue and requires knowledges to which the architects come with advantages that delivers their visions of wholeness

ESCENARIOS ACTUALES Y LA FORMACION DE LOS ARQUITECTOS ( parte 2)

THE COMPLEX LABOR SITUATION

Do invest important part of our life studying architecture?, We know who we have it, to study architecture is often a long process, with a goal somewhat uncertain even after passing the barrier of the early years, it's a normal situation - the acid students contribution from worldwide forum in Internet shown it - everywhere, in every university to study architecture implies a high standard to meet a requirement that also requires great physical effort to develop time exercises. The life of a student may be a string of late nights even with the great help given the technology today. This is not compensated by job security once graduated, rather the hopes of many young architects crash into the low demand in societies like ours, and with some minor difference in other advanced societies (10). Places are limited for architects, political shares for job places and other bad practices like "a little help of friends" reduce the job opportunities, on the other hand, the requirements from time to time shows the public system for a job for architect, usually a well-staged act to regulate some an-normal situations, its therefore normal that the architect just out faces half that request, and therefore must seek alternative ways for their livelihood. Some years ago, Jeanne Sahadi (11), CNN / Money senior writer wondered why architects are so poorly paid?, Putting in a single stage to architects, chefs and scientists, the question may have many answers, but puts evidence another complex aspect of the situation, even with work, the architects do not have good salaries.

One of the clearest factors present in the labor field conditions could be the saturation, the press and some websites that manage data for the employment status of the careers (12) have put the note of warning, warning young people about the saturation situation facing some careers, including a career in architecture, which also requires in Chile 22.7 years to recover the investment it means to study it. What is more encouraging is not, in general, housing companies and the state still plays with fees downward, and projects requiring smaller and smaller times, which translates into the equation more work for the same income.
To place the picture even more complex in terms of request for public tenders in drafts of architecture and public facilities and private, two other indicators are noticed, the first shows that the number of participants that meet requirements according to the rulers of request, increases considerably with respect to similar proposals in the mid-nineties, resulting in greater competitiveness, and the latter is not active filters such as experience, and thus cannot enforce the know-how, an adverse impact on the way for other generations of architects.

THE SOLITUDE OF EDUCATION

Architects are made for the architects that could be the slogan that is seen throughout the training process of the architects, some famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright came to building their own schools of architecture and the learning process was born and ends on inspiration, skills, training, capabilities and reliability of the teacher.

Being the architecture a profession that works linked to social and political events, technological, economic, territorial and even speculative future, it's almost childish to think that their learning processes do not require input from other disciplinary visions that embody the architects in their own world views, methods and concepts (13). All available information shows that the world today is more complex, but it is also clear, you cannot spend your life studying to be a Renaissance genius, the fundamental question then is how far can?.

It appears that at least one certainty is obtained from the above scenarios, the architects needed in the composition of inputs, cannot form themselves into a kind of limbo self-referential or tautological circle, on the other hand, many conservatives may think greater involvement of "outsiders" in the chair and workshops could conspire with the "ethos" of architecture, at this, sometimes there are architects who launched a furious "... we are architects, sociologists do not ...".

Properly handle the problem of reflection training environment, including in it the expectations of student success and innovation and flexibility, is a task that cannot be avoided, and that first called to the humility, study skills finish and above all, a review of the knowledge imparted, as these, which might be debatable even within the same training procedures because once emerged from workshops and classrooms, on the street in the real life, This knowledge becomes true for non-architects, and to the point that these truths are sustained, there will be success.

ESCENARIOS ACTUALES Y LA FORMACIÓN DE LOS ARQUITECTOS ( Parte 1)

CURRENT SCENARIO AND THE FORMATIVE PROCESSES OF THE ARCHITECTS

PROBLEMS AND DEMAND IN A CHANGING WORLD

In many speeches of scientists and contemporary thinkers, we find many challenges to the understanding reached between the disciplines and professions, resulting in those world the scientific, technological or artistic the floor is moving, which makes it difficult to clarify ideas, in contrast, relativism seems to be constant. The architectural education is not immune to the phenomenon has been undergoing major changes since the fall of the theoretical speech from functionalism movement in the mid-70s, in some European academies there is a kind of unease that has going to try them to approve the teaching between each other without success, on the other hand, the Bologna Declaration of 1999 that attempts to converge the curriculum to enhance the exchange, it exposes the problem which employs cross-training centers that the curricula of careers are quite varied depending on the idiosyncrasies and reality of each country, in this case European countries, but is not foreign to our Latin American reality.

Following Rafael Moneo who understands architecture as a "conventionalizing of formal inventions" would in the case of architecture a more aggravating, is that body of knowledge of architecture in general is fragmented, responds well to deep convictions, interests experimental and expertise rather than a logical content body binding and disciplinary boundaries, therefore, form, focus, emphasis and methodological construction of systems based practice are essential when transferring knowledge in this Actually, it seems to build teaching on other aspects not pragmatic that is not derived from the events can be complex, foolish and counterproductive.

The requirements to which architects are required in the country today, are not so different from those faced by other professional architects in other countries and other regions and economies. But the complexity of what is happening in our country in terms of training of professionals, should be positioned first proper coordination at least in the local environment, and it seems also important to build that coordination from realistic approaches and overlapping in professional issues facing the architect in that environment, assuming the construction of a new training structure, with binding targets, socialized, and achieve a greater commitment to achieving operational real powers and enable the capture of opportunities, suggesting the presence of new designs methodology for teaching and their associated actions.

EXCESS AND LACK OF STRENGTH

The extraordinary range born primarily within the private universities in Chile do find some 44 careers in architecture, with 18 career Santiago and the rest spread over 13 races in the north and a similar number in the south of the country, this quota is a universe of approximately 3340 news students per year. The architect Hernan Pretch following comment on the formation of the School of Architecture at the Universidad Andres Bello, emphasizes another worrying aspect in the design of new offers for the professionals' formation to discuss: ... "... ... the design and engineering of it is a Capture, Hold and Dispose professionals. Hold, then on the average stay of a university in the stagnant pattern of 0 +6, or 0 +5, where there are no intermediate outputs or degrees of comparison to what a student receives European and American still the 2 +2 system +2, or 4 +2- -. Master included Here the Master or MBA is a flourishing business apart, which makes the student an input piece that must be in college for 9-10 years., then the marketing and design business strategies with these goals, which in summary create a business of architectural education that considers continuing education probably never end.
In another stage of architectural education, the lack of level of research on the architectural phenomenon, especially with the lack of a secure floor where we are taking some theoretical assumptions on which speculation has led some architects to light the alert about the real responsibilities of architects to be in the universities, this is a paradox if we consider the above related to the supply of vacant university, then this could result in strategies to create the business of training of architects, there is not a slight proximity with the heart of the matter, content and relevance.

The recent earthquake on February 27th 2010, left uncovered another interesting aspect is also the professional skills of architects, it are these aspects related to the buildings of the cities affected. At all times, despite the efforts of some professional architects to contribute at least technical comments on the situation of the buildings, the public generally exercised almost blind trust in the engineering and engineers, so in many buildings appeared certifications letter sheet on diagnosis of habitability, this suggests that citizens in the collective unconscious, the architects have jurisdiction over the buildings likely healthy, but not in sick buildings or mistreated by the natural phenomenon.

In the field of urban studies, another of the traditional field of the work of architects and their supposed knowledge, each day is displayed without shame and including human and economic tragedy, the complexity of what is happening today in the cities that any attempt to take what they learn in traditional educational processes and in the solitude of an academic workshop, a strong position based on an understanding of what really happened, or what is the reason behind the problems that could be detected in the jumble of symptoms.
The concern and decision making at the macro territory in many cases is moved to the spontaneous, incidental, political, we might say even total dispersion because no one reaches its capacity of synthesis methodologies necessary, finally ending the execution of structuring projects of the territories in the hands of some technocrats who are blind, end up imposing some abstract models that are a caricature of macro territories.

In the micro-territory, the district, the local community, the neighborhood, the street, just come to study the urban case particularly when the body is in rigor mortis, it because the concern come when the damage is so great that in many cases everything is dead, many parts of the national cities are actually in rigor mortis. What is expected of specialists in town, cities or planning, it is just the opposite, it expects the outlook that we could understand before the crisis, allowing the early decision-making. In the field of matter, the training of architects could not make the difference due to the lack of relationship with the multidisciplinary, inhibiting their behavior, their speech, and competence in a context which by their nature should belong to them. A foreign geographer once I ponder the following speech "... when the architects insert a building in the territory, do not respect the invisible networks of connections and relationships within them, is that an urban unit, a neighborhood, a place, community space, the city actually it is like a giant scissors cut with years of relations and especially customs that cannot see, over the years the wound heals, but the scars remain, the city is full of scars ... "
In the area of building on the other hand, the skills of architects are in retreat, the lack of adequate training in this field needs to be reviewed it in- depth, but should be able to adapt and formulated more dynamically methodology of learning because the technology changes that leave out operational knowledge of the game, not in the abstract conception of the building, but in the process of this. For now it appears that the architect continues to form the basis of traditional processes, so it will become unreliable in the short- term.

ESCUELAS , VIVIENDA SOCIAL Y COMUNIDADES

Can we be better if we have a better physical environment that receives us?, this question has planted on my head in a long time and It is synthesized by the following matter: if we have good conditions of physical space adapted and designed well to live, to work, to study, to walk, to be, etc. Have we major possibilities of being better, in the wide sense of the word?.
During the last 14 years in Chile the condition stimulated programs to endow the public schools of new infrastructure, new buildings, which were coming to solve old problems of functionality and endowment of new suitable enclosures for the education. I had to take part in several of these projects, but I remember one case especially, a school that with a precarious infrastructure, there was receiving a population of children from an environment with social complex problems, Boca Sur in Concepcion, and with that a student population was constituted by very low levels of successes and by a daily very difficult conviviality. After the reconstruction of the school, little or nothing it changed, still when one was possessing new rooms, new baths, new library, new dining rooms, etc.
From a vision in perspective , and in agreement to official indexes, the results of the politics of improvement of the educational programs and his support, the improvements in the educational infrastructures of the program called “ JEC”, - in which many million dollars were invested-, they are disappointing, the indicators of improvements known in test for students like SIMCE or still in the test of university selection PSU, they show frustrating results, do not reveal improvements, even more, they indicate that the gaps with more well-off sectors of the society, and that are educated in the private system have been increased, the difference is really important, and increases.

In case of the social housing, I have asked myself the same thing. The government of Chile has realized gigantic efforts for providing with housings the population of more low income of the country, in the stage of certain precariousness, the government planning e has tried to come quantitatively with one housings of about 40 m2 for the major number of poor families,
Designing for a hypothetical typical family, in the last nine years there has been constructed an average of 80.000 social housings of low standard for year, and with it the map of some urban zones has changed dramatically, the problem proves still more complex if it thinks that approximately 500.000 units are needed even more and apparently more of the same thing comes.

The evaluations that have realized numerous studies to check the situation of to live in these housings and in the neighborhood that they have formed they have come to worrying conclusions, the authors think that signs of social deterioration that it goes from the urban segregation up to the social estigmatización. With the manufacture of massive of housing not only a suitable magma has been created for the birth of urban destructive subcultures, also a toxic environments have been created for those Hard-working families that have some project of life and that they live there.

It might, as in the case of the schools be thought that some steps have raised for the improvement of the conditions, that we are better, but it seems to me that others have stooped all those and definitively we are not better.

My perception is that the new buildings, we say new architectures, they do not help to improve complicated or toxic environments and it is more, in case of the social housing, one has helped to cultivate in these environments some bad existing potentials. The facts demonstrate it.

What to do?, I do not believe that the solution goes for the construction of the physical spaces, in the first one of the cases, the school, the problem takes root in the family, the children come from families with problems of drug addiction, illiteracy, alcoholism, one parent only, etc, at best case, workers with low income always absent, in the second one of the cases, the problem is similar, or the same one, the school comes to be only another indicator of the same problem that happens with to live in the populations, in this way the physical works on infrastructures or news buildings they are only slightly external to the complex social problems and difficultly they help to improve.

With education the culture comes, with culture the personal development comes, with the personal development the projects of life also comes, and with it the development of the society the opportunity for the architecture finally comes. Our president make a mistake when he says that with major index per capita we will be developed, a developed society or country is first of all a group of developed citizens.

In another complementary matter, in case of the social housing, it seems to me that it is possible to help a little on having increased the surfaces and minimal house, 40 m2 does not receive the family and 60 or 100 m2 of area do not shelter the needs of exterior space, a suffocation of the way to live according to the Chilean standards occurs , more near to the country live that to the city. Finally stay away important it is the urbanism, Chile does not trust in the town planner, does not believe his opinion, does not give value to think the city.
