¿Podemos sobrevivir como arquitectos?

Todos los arquitectos sabemos que en nuestro mundo hay estrellas de la arquitectura, gente famosa, arquitectos que reciben premios internacionales y son reconocidos por la comunidad de pares, dan charlas, escriben libros y en general hace buenas obras
Sin embargo, hoy por hoy los arquitectos son una multitud, una suerte de población mundial que crece sin restricción y en forma exponencial, una población que se hace más y más densa en las ciudades, y que amenaza con entrar en una guerra caníbal por los pocos recursos que las sociedades ponen a su disposición.
Bastantes sitios y comentarios en foros de internet dan cuenta del problema de sobrepoblación de arquitectos, en algunos países como Chile, no hay restricción para la apertura de nuevas escuelas y es dable esperar que antes que haya un control algo más severo, se sigan produciendo arquitectos en una forma cada vez más ejecutiva y por lo tanto más eficiente, es decir, hay una gran maquinaria produciendo arquitectos.
Tenemos entonces que existe una numerosa “otredad”. Los que ya somos arquitectos y no tenemos la suerte de estar entre los “ star” de la arquitectura internacional, ya sea por falta de oportunidades, falta de agresividad o simplemente por falta de capacidad, ¿ somos necesarios?, ¿qué hacemos?, ¿ cómo sobrevivimos?, ¿cómo pagamos los costos de la formación’- ( en Chile algunos sitios estiman que se requieren unos 22 años para recuperar la inversión), ¿ cómo pagamos las rentas?.
El tema es complejo y tiene muchas aristas, pero me parece que todavía puede haber mucho campo de desarrollo y trabajo, y aventurando algunas ideas fundamentales me parece que se requieren cambios entre los cuales posiciono tres líneas de acción:
1.- Una revolución: La arquitectura no es a mi juicio una delicatesen que se sirve en platos pequeños y es para el goce de un selecto grupo de personas, la arquitectura en mi idea sobre ella, implica entre otros el desarrollo, la evolución, la investigación y finalmente el avance en el hábitat humano.
El vivir implica la creación de espacios no naturales para acoger la vida, y en ello la arquitectura resulta fundamental. Tan angular es esto que si nos tomamos un tiempo para pensar, es dable concluir que la arquitectura ubica sus interese en el inicio de la cadena del bienestar humano, es decir sobre la base en la cual se asienta cualquier otra manifestación, acción o emprendimiento, porque resuelve la complicada problemática del habitar, así, la seguridad, el confort, la tranquilidad y sobre todo la protección y sobrevivencia a nuestra débil humanidad, esta imbricada en el resultado de los espacios arquitectónicos, para bien o mal de quien los habita.
La visión que la mayoría de las personas tiene sobre la necesidad de la arquitectura es bastante triste, “las personas entenderán por arquitectura una noción abstracta, es decir, un conjunto de aspectos que los edificios tienen en común con los cuadros y las estatuas” decía Leonardo Benévolo en uno de sus escritos , yo creo que también cargamos con el peso de ser históricamente cortesanos, es decir, la de productores de bienes para una elite ya sea gobernante o dominante. Sobre este tema, creo que la arquitectura no se ha democratizado (uno de mis ensayos expone este tema en profundidad), no ha llegado al grueso de la población y por ende, no ha construido puentes de relación, que podrían ser muchos, muy ricos y muy variados.
Quisiera ver en las revistas de arquitectura, más que exclusivos modelos o prototipos de obras, tal como piezas exclusivas u obras de colección, algo más masivos, algo más orientado al buen vivir de las personas comunes y corrientes, más que una casa del gerente de una multinacional, la casa de un grupo de pescadores, más que las oficinas de un talento de las finanzas, me gustaría ver las instalaciones de una pequeña empresa, hecha con pocos recursos y pero con mucho talento.
A mí me parece que se requiere una revolución, un cambio más o menos radical, que convoque junto al pueblo, los revolucionarios de las escuelas de arquitectura, que ya son bastantes y los arquitectos revoltosos y complicados , la idea es cambiar la idea de arquitectura en las clases gobernantes y en todo el mundo. La arquitectura es un producto de primera necesidad y no una delicatesen.

2.- Un cambio de paradigma: Creo que falta un cambio de paradigma, y si ese cambio fuera posible tiene que ver a mi juicio al menos con dos aspectos relacionados o vinculantes entre sí. El primero de ellos y del cual se desprende el otro dice relación con el arte, creo que nuestra concepción del arte en arquitectura es distorsionante, creo que la arquitectura se explica solo como arquitectura y no como pieza o división del arte, y antes que esta afirmación me condene , acepto que algunas obras de talentosos arquitectos, sean además de buenas obras de arquitectura, también obras de arte, pero eso es harina de otro costal. Nuestra relación con el arte es peligrosa, porque condiciona la mente del arquitecto a querer ser y ser admirado como artista y con ello, cerrar aún más su meta mundo de donde vienen sus ideas, pero también nos aleja peligrosamente de la técnica.
En segundo lugar, me parece que no somos escultores, sin bien, como señaló un extraordinario escultor, Eduardo Chillida, también esculpimos el espacio con formas, nosotros pensamos en el espacio, y no en el espacio abstracto del artista sino que el espacio sistémico, y consecuentemente involucrado con el acontecer y las personas.
Hoy, muchos arquitectos han olvidado o han querido olvidar un aspecto que nos separa del mundo de la escultura, la influencia psicológica del espacio arquitectónico en el usuario, el nuestro no sólo es un espacios estético como ocurre con lo escultórico , y además funcional como se enseña en la cátedra, es a mi juicio un espacio simbiótico, un espacio que llega a formar parte de la corporeidad humana, y como tal ejerce efectos, a veces indeseados sobre las conductas de las personas, sobre este tópico, aparte de la “ Dimensión oculta “ de Edward Hall y los trabajos de Kevin Lynch, hay una carencia de estudios espantosa. .
Un nuevo paradigma, nos debería llevar en primer lugar a construir argumentos propios y sólidos frente a otras disciplinas dominantes como la economía, ello implicaría revisar lo que ocurre en la forma en que pensamos y como ese pensamiento nos lleva a distorsionar la realidad , así probablemente habría que replantear muchas de las barbaridades conceptuales que hoy se plantean y dar solidez a nuevos conceptos, nuevos interpretaciones, nuevas herramientas que permitan abordar problemáticas complejas como las viviendas sociales , que hoy por hoy son artefactos habitables que están llevando a sus ocupantes a la enajenación mental.
3.- Una tercera idea y final es poner alfombra roja a la investigación y no al marketing: Probablemente esta sea una de esas disciplinas que más ha sido invadida por el marketing, muchos arquitectos ven en la divulgación de sus trabajos, una forma de vida, una especie de receta a la sobrevivencia, de esa forma intentan presentar sus capacidades para que los futuros clientes, asombrados por tanta genialidad les entreguen sus encargos. , esta actitud también se aprecia en las charlas docentes Aquellos otros, los cerebros grises que también existen en la arquitectura ( pero son una especie en extinción) se pasean en el anonimato. Me parece que es tiempo de poner alfombra roja a quienes desde sus trabajos de investigación entregan sus aportes al conocimiento arquitectónico, luces al hábitat del futuro, inteligencia al hacer. Entre tantas luces de neón del marketing al cual estamos acostumbrados, olvidamos que la investigación es la base del avance humano.

Can we survive as architects?

All architects know that there are "stars" in our architectural world, famous people, architects who are receiving international awards and are recognized by the community of colleagues, give conferences, write books and generally do good work.
However, today's architects are a multitude, a sort of growing world population without restriction, a population that becomes more and more dense in the cities, threatening to walk into a cannibal war for few resources available to them.

Many sites and comments on Internet forums aware of the problem of overpopulation of architects, in some countries like Chile, there is no restriction for opening new schools and it is reasonable to expect that before there is a more severe control, there continue to be architects in an increasingly more executive and therefore more efficient, in the end of day there is a great machine producing architects.
We have then that there is a large otherness. Those who already are architects and we have no chance of being among the "star" of the international architecture, either to lack of opportunity, lack of aggression or simply a lack of capacity, are we needed?, What we do? , how we survive?, how to pay the costs invest in education (in Chile some sites estimate that it takes about 22 years to recoup the investment), how we pay the rent?.

The issue is complex and has many edges, but I think there may still be much room for development and work, and venturing some fundamental ideas seem to me to require changes including position three lines of action:.

1 .- Revolution: The architecture is not my opinion, a delicacy that is served in small plates and is for the enjoyment of a select group of people, architecture in my mind about it, means including the development, evolution, research and ultimately advancing the human habitat.
Living involves creating unnatural spaces to accommodate the life, and in this architecture is essential. As this angle is that if we take time to think, we can conclude that the architecture locates his interest in the beginning of the chain of human welfare, this mean that on the basis on which it sits any other event, action or endeavor it solves the complicated problem of living well, safety, comfort, tranquility and above all the protection and survival of our human weakness, the result is embedded in architectural spaces, for better or worse of those who inhabit them.

The vision that most people have about the necessity of the architecture is quite sad, "people will understand an abstract concept architecture, " a set of issues that buildings have in common with the paintings and statues," said Leonardo Benevolo in one of his writings, I believe that we have borne the burden of being historically courtiers, people who make a kind of product for a ruling elite or dominant sector of society. On this issue, I believe that architecture has not been democratized (an essay exposes this issue in-depth) has not reached the bulk of the population and therefore did not build bridges of relationship which could be many, very rich and varied.

I would like to see in the magazines of architecture, rather than unique models or prototypes of works as unique pieces or works of collection, more massive, more oriented to good living of ordinary people, rather than a manager's house a multinational, the home of a group of fishermen, rather than the offices of a talent for finance, I would like to see the facilities of a small company, made with few resources, but with much talent.

I think it takes a revolution, a more or less radical change, to call together the people, the revolutionary architecture schools, which are enough and the architects unruly and complicated, the idea is to change the idea of architecture in the ruling classes and around the world. The architecture is a staple and not a deli.

2 .- A paradigm shift: I think we need a change of paradigm, and if that change is possible has to do in my view at least two aspects or binding together. The first of them, which showed the other has to do with art, I think our concept of art in architecture is distortions, I think that architecture can be explained only as architecture and not as part or division of art, and before this statement condemning me, I agree that some works of talented architects, are in addition to good work of architecture, also works of art, but that's another story.

Our relationship with art is dangerous because it conditions the mind of the architect to want to be and to be admired as an artist and thus further its goal of closing the meta-world where your ideas came from, but we also avert dangers of technology.

Secondly, I think that we are not sculptors, perhaps as noted by an extraordinary sculptor, Eduardo Chillida, also we sculpted the space with shapes, but we think of space, not in the abstract space like the artist, but that space systems, and consequently involved with the events and people.

Today, many architects have forgotten or wanted to forget one aspect that separates us from the world of sculpture, the psychological influence of architectural space on the user, ours space is not only an aesthetic space as with the sculptural and functional as well teaches in the academy or school of architecture. In my opinion, it's a symbiotic space, a space that becomes part of human embodiment, and as such exerts effects, sometimes unwanted behaviors on individuals, on this topic, apart from the "Dimension hidden" by Edward Hall and the work of Kevin Lynch, is a frightening lack of studies. .

A new paradigm should lead us first to construct solid arguments, and against other key disciplines such as economy, this would involve reviewing what happens in the way we think and how that thought leads us to distort reality, and probably would have to rethink many of the atrocities now pose conceptual and solidify new concepts, new interpretations, new tools to address complex issues such as social housing, which today are living artifacts that are carrying their occupants to the alienation mental.

3 .- A third and final idea is to put on the red carpet the research and not marketing: This is probably one of those disciplines that has been invaded by the marketing, many architects are in disseminating their work, like a way of life, a recipe for survival, thus trying to present their capabilities to prospective customers, astounded by so much genius will deliver your orders. This attitude is also seen in such other educational talks, gray brains also exist in the architecture (but they are an endangered species) walking in anonymity. I think it's time to put those red carpet from his research give their contribution to architectural knowledge, light the habitat of the future, intelligence to do. Among the many marketing neon lights which are used to, forget that research is the foundation of human progress.
